BMW has done a great job in improving their brand new BMW 5-Series model – as a result, according to a Bloomberg report, the maker sales projections have been exceeded for a long time. Started in Europe in March is the new five-F10 Series now flag team for the German manufacturer, which announced in 2005, took the crown of the premium car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz – and it does stand out as it would keep it to a some time now. According to CEO Norbert Reithofer, BMW plans to 1.3 million units sold this year, “and the new 5-series sounds like their best chance against recession.  Good job BMW.

BMW 5 series

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

There’s a new 5-Series and it’s looking good. BMW has finally taken all the covers off the new 5 Series after yesterday giving us a peak of what it’s been testing the last few months.

The new 5 is codenamed the F10 and unlike the E60 that went before it, the new one looks good. Let’s face it – when the previous one was launched everybody was appalled shocked by those freakishly long eyebrows and the design were sadly not Chris Bangles best moment. An indication that you shouldn’t be smoking what he was smoking when you design a car.

Lesson learnt.

The new 5 is a much more graceful, completely uncontroversial design and there is a lot of the 7 series’ design language integrated in the new 5, but you’ll see that for yourselves in the photos and the video.

The new 5 series will be launched during the first quarter of 2010 in Europe, but we’ll have to wait and see when it comes to SA.

See the press release below for additional details.

The world debut of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan once again marks the epitome of aesthetic design and supreme driving pleasure in the upper midrange segment. Through its sporting and elegant looks, driving dynamics typical of the brand, outstanding efficiency as well as innovative comfort and safety features, the sixth generation of BMW’s executive express convincingly reflects the supreme standard of the world’s most successful manufacturer of premium cars throughout the entire process of development.

BMW 320d EfficientDynamics

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Dealerships in Germany, Spain, France and Italy will be offering a 320d EfficientDynamics Edition alongside the usual 320d edition. The EfficientDynamics edition is said to be the most fuel-efficient and lowest emission BMW in the current model range. This edition is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine assisted by an aluminum crankcase, a diesel particulate filter, common rail direct fuel injection with piezo-injectors and variable intake geometry.
This amalgamation of technology takes the maximum power to 163hp churned between 3,500rpm and 4,200rpm. Also, the maximum of torque of 360Nm is available from 1,750rpm to 3,000rpm. Consequently, the 0 – 100km/h time is 8.2 seconds and the top speed is 225km/h. The efficiency factor is furthered with the use of Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start Stop function, a shift indicator and electronic power steering which function as one only when required.

BMW X6

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Hybrid commuters are sprouting from every corner of the globe which eventually is great for the otherwise depleting world. The latest name belonging to the category is the BMW X6 Active Hybrid which is powered by a 400 hp 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine in combination with two electric synchronous motors (rated at 91 hp and 86 hp).

As a consequence the X6 Active Hybrid has a combined maximum output of 480 hp with 575 lb-ft of torque. So despite being a hybrid it accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds while it can reach a top speed of 130mph (electronically limited). With the incorporation of the Hybrid powertrain, there is a 20% improvement in the average fuel consumption with the CO2 emissions rating at 231 grams per kilometer. At lower speeds only one of the motor comes into usage and it is only when more power is required, that the second motor starts the combustion engine. Other interesting features include an electronic power steering system, an Auto Start/Stop system, a modified suspension and a lightweight braking system. There is also a powerdome hood and 20-inch light-alloy Aero wheels. The sales for the car are expected later this year.

BMW Z2

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

bmw-z2BMW are working their butts out to bring a new concept at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and it’s not just any concept. It’s a BMW Z2 roadster that will be built on the same platform with the new 1-series with lightweight materials (should weigh less than 1,000 kg) and technology that should offer both power and fuel efficiency. Suposedly sent forward by MINI’s full range of 1.6-liter engines and a high-speced new twin-turbo 2.0-liter that outputs 250 hp, the new BMW Z2 is expected to cost you a good $30,000 when it’s going to be available in 2013.
